Featured Artist – Susie Hall
Susie immerses herself in her work, painting intuitively and imaginatively, allowing head and heart, hand and brush to join together in mysterious collaboration. She finds inspiration around her in nature and in cities – almost anything her eyes alight upon, resulting in abstract and semi-abstract paintings. Her works has been variously described as powerful, transformational, expressive and unique. Susie is a prolific artist, constantly developing her practice, experimenting with paint and process using mainly acrylics and a variety of mediums and tools.
“I try to keep my work ‘my own’ and original in every respect,” says Susie. “Fortunately, I have been blessed with a vivid imagination, a passion to create, and an endless supply of ideas. I am currently challenging myself to paint with a reduced palette of subtle colours and incorporating texture into my work.”
Susie was born in Bedfordshire, England, and even as a very small child, I would sit for hours with wax crayons and paper, making marks, making shapes, making patterns. She grew up in a creative family, her father was a sculptor and her mother painted therefore Susie was always encouraged in her artistic pursuits and never felt restricted in what she was doing. Mainly this was having fun.
Eventually Susie discovered poster paints and started producing large, colourful works. All of that was a long time ago and in between then and now she has experimented with many different mediums. There has been a textile painting phase, a silk painting period and working in pastels for a while.
There were long periods of time when Susie was busy with family and ‘proper’ work and rarely painted anything with intent or even for fun. In those days she wrote poetry and short stories instead; creating different worlds with words instead of colour.
A few years later Susie became an art teacher at a local school and had a great time finding herself to be a natural teacher. However she then went off at a tangent and founded a paint your own pottery studio in Bedford which very quickly became successful and a talking point in the town. Sadly, due to personal circumstances and with reluctance the businessman’s sold some nine years ago, though it still exists.
The world works in mysterious ways. After another change in personal circumstances, about seven years or so ago Susie was commissioned to paint a few canvases and reminded her just how important painting is to her. She realised that she still loves colour and gets excited at the prospect of a new, blank canvas just waiting to be brought to life. Susie states that her work reflects herself in many ways – she paint intuitively and from the heart, nearly always choosing the colours first. Inspiration can come from anywhere, at any time; from something seen or something thought of in her imagination, or even from the lighting of stage or television sets. Susie often get ideas for paintings or colour combinations and shapes just as she is drifting off to sleep.
Susie does not attempt or want to simply reproduce what exists already, but prefer to interpret what she sees or feels and let to allow her imagination to lead the way to creating something new. She resists being pigeonholed by what she does in life, or in what she paints. Susie’s wonderful abstract paintings are borne from her imagination, love of colour and a passion to create. Now working mainly in acrylics, sometimes oils, occasionally both.
Susie’s aim is to evoke a mood or perhaps prompt a thought that words alone cannot convey ands continues to experiment and develop her practice.
Susie Hall original paintings will be on sale at the Windsor Contemporary Art Fair 10th & 11th November 2018 with
Flying Ducks Art Gallery.
